Commercialization has long been a buzzword in the blockchain industry, yet real-world adoption remains limited. Seoul Labs is taking a different approach by focusing on user experience rather than blockchain technology itself.
Guided by its "Forget Blockchain" philosophy, Seoul Labs aims to build Blockchain-as-a-Service that users can interact with naturally without ever needing to understand the underlying technology. Its KOICA ODA CTS project in Laos, focused on digital identity, reflects this vision in practice.
The following is an interview with Dohee Jang, CEO of Seoul Labs.
Q. What kind of company is Seoul Labs?
A. Seoul Labs is a blockchain company developing its own Layer 1 mainnet. Beyond building blockchain infrastructure, our goal is to develop a commercial-grade mainnet designed for real-world services. While many blockchain projects have focused primarily on investment and cryptocurrencies, Seoul Labs is focused on creating services that can be used in the real economy.
Q. What does the motto "Forget Blockchain" mean?
A. The blockchain industry has traditionally been technology-driven. However, what matters most to users is not the technology itself, but convenience. Just as people use a refrigerator without understanding how it works internally, blockchain should be just as invisible. Our goal is to create a platform that users can enjoy without needing blockchain knowledge and that businesses can adopt with ease.
Q. How is Seoul Labs' "commercial mainnet" different from existing blockchain networks?
A. Many blockchain projects emphasize technical specifications and architectural concepts. From the beginning, Seoul Labs has focused on commercialization. We have already signed a KOICA ODA CTS agreement in Laos, and through upcoming field research we will gradually define concrete implementation plans and real-world use cases.
Q. What is the significance of the Laos ODA project?
A. The project explores practical applications of digital identity while identifying solutions tailored to local conditions. Building digital identity infrastructure in an environment where such systems are still underdeveloped carries both technological and social significance.
Q. How does Seoul Labs differentiate itself from other blockchain projects?
A. Many blockchain projects measure adoption by transaction volume, but in reality, those transactions are often investment or trading activities. Seoul Labs focuses on service-driven transactions generated by real-world applications such as digital identity and electronic documents. Our emphasis is on transactions created through everyday services, not speculative trading.
Q. What are Seoul Labs' technical strengths?
A. One of blockchain's greatest challenges is the Blockchain Trilemma—balancing scalability, security, and decentralization. Seoul Labs addresses this challenge through a dual-chain architecture, separating roles to improve speed, cost efficiency, and stability simultaneously. Our network currently operates with transaction fees below KRW 0.001 and approximately 30,000 active nodes.
Q. What are the company's key goals for this year?
A. Our priorities are expanding the global value of our mainnet, accelerating commercialization, and further advancing our technology. Through the Laos project and various R&D initiatives, we aim to achieve meaningful progress in both technology development and real-world service deployment.
